The Division of Applied Social Sciences seeks applications and nominations for a non-tenure track appointment at the level of full professor. The successful candidate will participate in domestic and international programs with the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) and serve as a faculty member in the Division of Applied Social Sciences. Responsibilities include agricultural market and policy research, outreach to disseminate research results, and interaction with policy makers, as well as teaching, advising, and other Departmental duties.

Responsibilities of the position include facilitating the successful operation and management of FAPRI including leadership in the specification, estimation, and operation of analytic systems designed to evaluate policy options for government and business decision makers in agriculture, food, nutrition, and the environment. Candidate will also be expected to play a part in the department’s graduate teaching program and maintain an active program of scholarship including publishing in scientific journals, advising graduate students, and attracting external grants.

FAPRI provides quantitative analysis of agricultural markets policy and biofuel markets and policy to the U.S. Congress and other domestic and international decision makers in a timely manner. Research areas are determined in large part by the expressed needs of policy makers. In recent years, FAPRI has conducted research that has helped policy makers understand issues related to domestic farm policies in the United States, the European Union, and other countries; international trade agreements and negotiations; and a wide range of developments in agricultural markets.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in FAPRI-MU agricultural market and policy research and in disseminating results. Specific thrust areas for analysis are need-based, as FAPRI works closely with policy makers to identify their immediate analytical needs, but may include developing further FAPRI’s capacity for crop and livestock policy analysis or extending the economic models up-stream or down-stream in the broader agricultural sector. Research is expected to lead to both scholarly publications and forms of communication more accessible to policy makers and the public.

While applied research at FAPRI will be a primary emphasis, the position will also involve graduate students mentoring, oversight of post-doctoral students, oversight of a staff of over twelve persons and other responsibilities in the Division.

The position is a 9-month appointment. The position is expected to have the following approximate allocation of effort: Administration – 10%, Research/scholarship – 70%, and Service & Engagement -20%.

The selected candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in agricultural or applied economics, economics or a related social sciences discipline. The selected candidate will be expected to collaborate within an interdisciplinary environment. He or she must have the capability to link scholarship work with engagement and policy efforts that extend past the University campus to national policy makers and opinion leaders.

He or she should also have experience in attracting external funding. Other desired qualifications include interpersonal skills, the ability to lead within an academic environment, work with interdisciplinary teams and the willingness to adapt as change arises.
