The importance of global markets to the U.S. agricultural industry means that in order to fulfill its mission of providing analysis of U.S. food and agriculture FAPRI-MU must also monitor international developments. For most of its history, FAPRI-MU has both conducted its own analysis of these markets and fostered relationships with institutes in other regions in order to gain insight into market developments and the workings of policies in other parts of the world.

Global Modeling System

FAPRI-MU maintains a number of models of markets outside of the U.S. One of the longest running models is that of the EU that is used in the FAPRI-Ireland and FAPRI-UK projects. Global systems have also been developed to analyze energy markets. At present a system of linked global models for agriculture is under development. The crops and oilseeds part of this has already been developed by Malieka T. Bordigioni at the University of Nevada, Reno.

FAPRI-MU is developing a global modeling system for use in conjunction with the U.S. model systems to analyze developments in markets and policies. Outlook projections, model descriptions and analysis will appear here as they become available.

Ongoing International Projects

Collaborations with international institutions are viewed by FAPRI-MU as a way of strengthening our global knowledge while developing a network of researchers across the world. These projects take many forms with different levels of engagement. Some projects involve FAPRI-MU building models and undertaking scenarios. Some have more of a training aspect, educating researchers in the “FAPRI” method that has proved successful in the analysis of agricultural markets and policies over the years. Prospective partners interested in linking with FAPRI-MU should contact Julian Binfield.

  • FAPRI-UK and FAPRI-Ireland: These are the longest running international projects at FAPRI-MU. Started in the mid-1990s, these projects have analyzed several CAP reforms, WTO issues and a variety of other policy and market issues important to the UK and Ireland.
  • FAPRI-MU in Africa: Since 2001 FAPRI-MU has worked with the University of Pretoria in their work to produce a FAPRI-style model for the analysis of policies and markets in South Africa. The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy produces baseline outlooks every year, as well as a wide range of analysis. Recently, BFAP has partnered with similar institutions in the region to form the Regional Network of Agricultural Policy Research Institutes (ReNAPRI).
  • FAPRI-MU in Bulgaria: Funded through the America for Bulgaria Foundation, FAPRI-MU has been working with the Institute of Agricultural Economics in Bulgaria in the development of a model of the Bulgarian agriculture and food sector. The project had its first outlook meeting in the fall of 2014.

Academic Exchange

In addition to the formal projects with institutions, FAPRI-MU has numerous interactions with students and academics from around the world. FAPRI-MU participates in exchanges under the USDA Borlaug and Cochran fellowships meeting with groups from a diverse range of countries. In addition, staff from institutes with close ties to FAPRI-MU often visit for longer periods.

FAPRI-MU is especially proud of the many ex-students scattered across the globe, many with very successful careers in agricultural economics and policy analysis.
